Journeys In Between
Ellie Shepherd was only twenty-three, the child of a sheltered, Wisconsin upbringing, when she fell under the spell of 78-year-old Robert Jordan and his dream, a dream in which she was to play a vital part.
Professor Jordan was a retired historian, a man plagued by frustration, lack of success, and unanswered questions. He was also a man emotionally consumed by a discovery he made earlier in his life, and by a desire to control its seemingly untamable power.
To him, Ellie was the embodiment of purity. He didn't want her involved in his prism of lies. She was strong, tenacious, youthful, yet her inquisitive nature would always steer her into trouble. And that was something Jordan feared most since she was the only one he could trust to possess the last mysterious piece of an ancient collection of artifacts. Unfortunately, Jordan 's sudden disappearance would create a much larger dilemma.
"I'm telling you, sweetheart, there is a limit," Dr. Marsh, one of Jordan 's colleagues, warned Ellie. "We are imbued with a form of logic not meant to be surpassed.
Anything further could lead to such a serious conflict within the conscious mind ...you may never find your way back."
But Ellie didn't care what Dr. Marsh believed. After her Uncle Franz’s death, she was intent on finding Jordan on her own. Only that proved to be impossible when she discovered that there were more victims involved in Jordan 's mystery, and Ellie becomes psychologically backed into a corner. Each new finding sets in motion wrenching decisions that force her to reckon with her past, and unravel the secrets behind the doctrinal strictures about the Garden of Eden.
Crossing the forbidden borders of countries rarely seen by Westerners, and armed with little more a backpack and water bottle, Ellie travels deep into the shadowy mountains of Ethiopia and enters a world where she would prove that she is a girl with no little courage.
Through the confronting of private demons, Ellie learns to open herself to the metaphysical strength that can bring in its wake personal wholeness and human stability. But could this capability aid in Jordan 's involvement with the human shadows of his past? Or will the artifacts yet again be buried under the ruble of traditional religious thinking?
